Unfolding Our Petals: A 5-Week Series on the Koshas

  • Eastside Yoga by Anamargret (map)

In Yoga, the Self is thought to be enfolded in five coverings called the Koshas.

In this workshop, we will explore how these five sheaths allow us to understand and experience our Self beyond the limits of the physical body and mind.

Beginning with the physical body we will move through the more subtle sheaths until we reach Anandamaya, the sheath of bliss and joy.

Using the tools of asana, pranayama, meditation, mantra, and discussion, we will slowly dig deeper to uncover more subtle aspects of the Self.

Each week we will build on our knowledge of the previous koshas, and by the end of this five-week exploration, you will:

  • Understand the vocabulary and theory of the koshas

  • Know practices that allow you to tangibly experience each layer of the Self

  • Expand your yoga practice with practical knowledge of the depths and complexity of the Self

The Gift of Restorative Yoga: A Free Class for the Community

The Gift of Restorative Yoga: A Free Class for the Community

Restorative poses help the body heal by finding homeostasis. According to nurse April Reiersen, “Chronic stress triggers inflammatory responses, and increased inflammation plays a central role in many disease. Studies have shown that relaxation therapies promote a decrease in inflammatory signaling in stressful situations. When the body is allowed to rest we see a physiologic response that promotes the health and healing of the body.”

Restorative Yoga is a great practice to rejuvenate your entire system and heal. By using props to hold the postures longer and support the body, our nervous system has time to recalibrate and allow the parasympathetic nervous system to turn on, while the unconscious fight or flight state that leads to chronic stress is turned off. We can consciously choose to practice a mindful softening into life and into who we are by being present.

Exploring the Niyamas through Yin Yoga

Register here: www.coursecraft.net/courses/z94S1

By observing our actions through the lenses of cleanliness, contentment, discipline, faith and divinity we learn to recognize our true Self more fully and to steer our lives in a more fulfilling direction.

In this workshop, we will use mind mapping, dialogue, meditation and Yin Yoga poses to bring these teachings to life.  We will study the continuing relevance of the Niyamas in our everyday life so that we can apply them in the here and now.

Without stories to orient us in the world, we would all be lost.  Our stories, created in the act of living, gathered from family, and shared with friends, allow us to remember the past and imagine our future.

Telling our stories keeps our ancestors alive, honors our own lives, and bring us together.  As this difficult year closes, I invite you to participate in the ancient ritual of storytelling.

On the evening of Dec. 24th, I will be hosting a space where we can come together to relate our favorite holiday stories. The ones that might make us laugh, cry or a combination of both. We’ll share the stories that bring joy to our hearts. Drop in to remember, share, and keep our stories alive.

This is a no-pressure event; come to listen, or maybe tell a story of your own. At whatever level, I encourage you to experience the power that comes from honoring our lives through storytelling.

We will meet as a group on ZOOM while at home you create a comfortable space for relating. Choose your favorite chair, hang out in bed, or find some cozy spot to tuck yourself away in.  The company of pets or stuffed animals is encouraged!  Toast our stories with a drink, or two!

We will start at 6:30 and end at 7:30’ish.  Pop in for as long as you like. I would love to have you join us.

Yamas & Yin

Exploring the Yamas through Yin Yoga

A Yoga Workshop with Anamargret

The Yamas are the first of the “eight limbs” of yoga and guide us in our interactions with the world and others.  Although they were composed over 2000 years ago, these principles remain relevant and important to living in the modern world.

In this workshop, we will use writing, contemplation, meditation, and Yin Yoga to bring these teachings to life.  We will study the continuing relevance of the Yamas in our everyday life so that we can apply them in the here and now.

Observing the Pairs of Opposites w/Anamargret & Chanti

  • Virtual Zoom Temple (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Throughout history, mythology, and found within sacred practices in many cultures and customs, separation is a tool for deep self-reflection. That said, it is helpful to have a map of what to observe within oneself. In this virtual summer retreat, we will discuss and observe the Yamas as a map for self- reflection.

Yama is often translated as “a list of restraints” or “what not to do” while we will look at this aspect, we will also discuss its opposite as a way to discover the elements of our self we can limit, as well as those we share. Both sides provide rich earth for contemplation to continue mapping who we are, and how we show up within our communities.

We start our weekend with a fire ceremony to light the flame of contemplation. Saturday and Sunday will be dedicated to observing the yamas individually and each day we will connect with community in breakout rooms, as well as integrate the feelings and teachings with a creative ritual.

Anamargaret and Chanti are dedicated to making this event a true expression of what it means to question and then to listen deeply and find one’s truth in the liminal, in-between.

This *Virtual* Summer retreat is for you if:

  • you desire to gain a new perspective about life, yourself as it relates to the pandemic

  • want to gather with other curious people/seekers

  • want to re-connect with yourself

  • are open to possibly face uncomfortable/shadow parts of yourself AND be able to see those parts with fresh, non-judgmental eyes.

  • long for the opportunity to share ideas about life

  • want to deconstruct ideas/beliefs we might have held but are no longer valid.

  • affirm that which we hold sacred

  • discover a different limb of yoga & a unique limb in ourselves

Learn to Meditate in 4 Easy Steps
A weekend workshop led by Anamargret & Fred

Finding yourself with a bit of extra time or feeling especially stressed out? This may be the perfect time to develop a meditation practice.

Meditation is an inward journey and a systematic process. This weekend workshop will guide you in that process in four steps. Over three days, you will learn techniques to relax your body and breath, focus your mind, and become aware of an immense stillness inside yourself.

Anamargret and Fred will bring together two key components of meditation: the ability to observe yourself through mindfulness and the ability to rest the mind in focused concentration.

As they lead you through a series of guided meditations, you will become increasingly comfortable with these foundational components of a meditation practice, and you will leave the workshop with the tools you need to discover the ever-present source of inner peace that dwells inside you.

Don’t miss this chance to either start or recommit to a meditation practice… it’s the perfect antidote for the times we live in.

Over a total of eight hours on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, we will explore these 4 Easy Steps of a practice:

  • Preparing the body and mind for meditation and choose a sitting posture that’s right for you

  • Practicing smooth, relaxed breathing, and awareness of the flow of the breath

  • Using a simple mantra to focus and rest the mind

  • Observing yourself and the thoughts that arise as you meditate

TIME

This workshop takes place online over three days, from May 29h -31th.

Friday, May, 29th, 6:00-8:00pm
Saturday, May, 30th, 2:00 - 5:00pm
Sunday, May, 31st, 2:00 - 5:00pm

Shoulders SOS: Strengthen, Open, Stabilize

This yoga workshop will focus on our shoulders to ease discomfort and improve mobility throughout the upper body.

We tend to use only a tiny portion of our shoulders’ range of motion in our daily lives, which leaves them stiff, weakened, and vulnerable to painful conditions such as tendonitis, bursitis, and frozen shoulder. Tension in the shoulders affects our breath, creates further stiffness in the neck, and can even make us feel lethargic.

Our shoulders also say a lot about how we feel as we move in the world. Are they rounded in discouragement and an effort to protect the heart? Are they open and signaling confidence? Are we carrying the weight of the world on our shoulders, or breezing lightly through life?

Join Anamargret for this 2-hour workshop focusing on the structure and function of the entire shoulder girdle. We will work on improving mobility throughout the shoulders and neck, and down through the arms to the wrists and hands. Our goals will be to:

• Ease discomfort and tension
• Strengthen, open, and stabilize the shoulders
• Breathe more deeply in a way that energizes the entire body
• Open the heart space for increased sensitivity and responsiveness to the world

You will leave this workshop understanding how to ease discomfort in the shoulders and with tools to maintain a yoga practice that improves mobility throughout your upper body.

Restorative Yoga Training: The Art of Stillness

This 10-hour training is designed for yoga teachers and students who want to learn how to design and sustain a Restorative Yoga practice.

Restorative Yoga uses props to hold poses for an extended length of time thereby resulting in numerous physical and mental benefits.

Using props to support the body and hold postures longer allows our nervous system to turn off the fight or flight impulse that produces chronic stress.

As a result, we feel rejuvenated, anxiety, pain, stress are reduced, and our blood pressure tends to be lowered. Restorative yoga also promotes relaxation, mental clarity, and a sense of well-being by calming the body and mind.

Through the process of mindful softening into restorative poses, we gain an intense awareness of being present.

This 10-hour series will address the following aspects of Restorative Yoga:

• philosophy
• use of props
• partner work
• sequencing
• breath work

The series is designed both for teachers and students of yoga. We will learn various ways to incorporate restorative techniques into our classes and home practice.

Space is limited. Reserve today to receive the early bird discount.

Hip Hip Hooray!

Hip Hip Hooray!

Tight hips trouble many of us daily with pain and limited mobility.

This workshop is designed for anyone who experiences tight and achy hips and would like to learn how to use yoga for effective relief.

Many of our most routine activities produce tightness in the hips. Long periods of sitting at work or while driving make our hip muscles disengage and become progressively weaker and shorter. Standing a long time also has this effect.  And cycling, running, and other forms of exercise that we hope will keep us fit actually worsen this condition by leading to adaptive shortening throughout the hips muscles. This tightness in the hips and surrounding muscles increase the risk of injury by straining tissues that are no longer able to move properly or freely.

In this 2-hour workshop, we will use yoga poses, various props, and breath exercises to both stretch and strengthen the muscles of the pelvis, back, and legs. By working and opening the hips we relieve pain and increase our body’s stability, flexibility, and mobility.

You will leave this workshop with the tools you need to feel better and maintain a home practice that targets the hip flexors, lower back, and hamstrings.

Active Healing: A Workshop for Women Recognizing and Reconciling Loss

A space for women reflecting on their pro-choice decision

“There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.” - Maya Angelou

This workshop is for women who are ready to reflect on and integrate a pro-choice decision, whether recent or decades old, into their self-understanding. My intention is to create a supportive space for women to come together with open hearts to speak, listen, and support each other.

The opportunity to speak our truths without judgment is a gift that relieves our burden. Through writing, ritual, and the support of others we will release the ghosts of past decisions and establish a healthy relationship with our past. We will honor ourselves and each other. Together we will craft a sacred space where we can:

• Craft our stories and speak our truth
• Experience loss without shame
• Recognize and reconcile the pain of past decisions
• Unburden with the support of others
• Experience loss and mourning without judgment

Please bring a notebook and an open mind. This special workshop will last 4 hours and participation is limited to ensure a supportive environment for all.

Yin Yoga: Journaling the Body

Yin yoga is a method of deeply connecting with the self by holding specialized yoga poses for extended periods of time.

In Yin, we “sink into shapes” using body weight, gravity, and sometimes props to gently ease bones and tissues away from each other.

As this occurs, a space of self-exploration opens and provides access to memories, feelings, and thoughts that remain "locked" within in our bodies and carried unconsciously throughout our lives.

In this special workshop Anamargret will combine Yin poses with journaling to open a space of deep self-reflection and emotional centering.

Journaling will allow us to probe our thoughts and sensations as they spontaneously well up during the practice and provide a written record for later reflection.

Space will be limited for this intimate practice, so reserve your spot today.  For more information, visit www.sacredspacemiami.com
